Northmount high first opened up in 1956 at the corners of bouchet, lavoie, Mackenzie and legare

The buiIding was built as there was a need for an English language high school in the van horne/queen mary area as students who-lived in that area had to go to montreal high school which was located downtown and was a healthy hike.

The school was built to hold about 1000 students but in the 1st year there was an enrolment of over 1200 and more classrooms were built in the basement which took space away from the schools cafeteria

The school was predominately jewish in the early years but by the end of the 1970's the student population had shifted to almost an entirely immigrant student body.

Although the building still stands, it has gone through many name changes and many uses.
